Brisbane is the capital of the Australian state of Queensland and is its most populous city. It is the largest local government body in Australia and is controlled by the Brisbane City Council. It is one of the major business hubs in the country as most major Australian companies and many international companies are located within the city. Brisbane's central business district is located along the Brisbane River. Its central streets are named after members of the royal family. Streets named after female royalty include Adelaide, Alice, Ann, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Margaret and Mary. Meanwhile, streets named after male members of the royal family include Albert, Edward, George, and William.

A minimum size for residential blocks was decreed in the city resulting in few terrace houses. However, due to the sudden boom in the city's population, apartments have been constructed within the city. Brisbane currently has two buildings that exceed 200 meters; the Riparian Plaza and the Aurora Tower. Two new buildings that will exceed 200 meters are Soleil and Infinity which are both under construction.

Brisbane enjoys a growing popular and classical music scene. Major venues include the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Queensland Conservatorium. Performances made by arts groups such as the Queensland Ballet, Opera Queensland, Queensland Theatre Company, and other professional companies are often staged at the two major venues. The Brisbane Powerhouse and the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts are also venues for visual arts, music and dance festivals.

Brisbane was nominated as one of the Top 5 International Music Hotspots by Billboard in 2007 along with cities such as Beijing, Berlin, Birmingham, and Marseilles.

Brisbane boasts a series of popular events that are flocked by tourists both international and local. Such events include the Ekka, Warana, Brisbane International Film Festival, Paniyiri Festival, Valley Fiesta, and the Bridge to Brisbane fun run.
