Sydney is the largest and most populous Australian capital city composed of local and foreign residents, and the state capital of New South Wales. It was the first British colony in the country and was established in 1788 at Sydney Cove by the commodore of the First Fleet, Arthur Phillip. Sydney is dotted with national parks, rivers, beaches such as the famous Bondi beach where the Sculpture of the Sea is held, and beautiful parks such as the Hyde Park and the Royal Botanical Gardens. The city is well known for its iconic Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.

Sydney is the venue for many different cultural festivals and social events. These include Australia's largest arts festival called the Sydney Festival, the Big Day Out, the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras along Oxford Street, and the Sydney Film Festival. Sydney's cultural institutions include the Sydney Opera House which is the home of Opera Australia and the Sydney Symphony.

Sydney has other famous tourist attractions such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge; Royal Botanical Gardens; and popular museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Australian Museum, the Powerhouse Museum, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Australian National Museum.

The most popular sport in Sydney is the rugby. Another popular sport during the summer is cricket. Sydney has hosted the 1992 Cricket World Cup and will host the 2015 Cricket World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Sydney is led by an elected Lord Mayor; however the city does not have an overall governing body. Instead, it is divided into several local government areas which have elected councils responsible for functions delegated by the New South Wales State Government.
